Walking

Where do I start? We are both keen walkers and have lived in North Wales for over 50 years but are still discovering amazing new walks. There are a number of walking books in the cottage and we are happy to make recommendations. I have set out a few ideas below
• Local walks from Gwaenysgor; there are footpaths in almost every direction close to the cottage offering a variety of terrain with views of Snowdonia, The Clwyd Hills, Liverpool, the Wirral and The Cumbrian Mountains (on a clear day). The Offa’s Dyke Long Distance Path passes a few fields away. There are laminated maps (1:25000) of the local area in the cottage.
• Snowdonia: 14 peaks over 3000 foot. Can be accessed in 45 minutes
• The Clwydian Range: south of Gwaenysgor overlooking the Vale of Clwyd. Designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The most popular hill is Moel Famau (354 metres) near Ruthin.
• Wales Coast Path: can be accessed right along the coast. There is a lovely walk through the sand dunes (through a SSSI) from Prestatyn, Barkby Beach towards the mouth of the Dee Estuary and then back along the beach (tide permitting) passing a colony of Little Terns (summer visitors)
• Anglesey Coastal Path: some spectacular sections and well worth the drive. Sea bird colonies, wild flowers and regular sightings of seals, porpoise and dolphins
• Brenig and Alwen Reservoirs on the Denbigh Moors. Circular walks of up to 10 miles on good surfaces and reasonably flat
